Pls excuse my ignorance, I'm new to blogging/blogs etc but ...
I want to change the text that appears under the contact form fields, but can't find it anywhere to change it AND the explanation that comes with the plugin says the form can be accessed by a custom permalink.
Well, um, err, what's a custom permalink and how do I create one.

A "custom permalink" is a URL, formatted your favorite way, that gets redirected to another page. To access the contact form, you'd usually use something like "http://yourblog.com/serendipity/index.p ... ntact_form" or something. You might want it to be something like: "http://yourblog.com/serendipity/contact.html".
To set the permalink to the contact form, go to "Configure plugins", click the "Contact Form" plugin, and fill out the Custom Permalink field at the top. Note that you don't need the http://yourblog.com, but you do need the rest of the path, and it needs to end in .html or .htm. Then click the "Save" button (as if you hadn't figured that out yourself).
Changing the text is different. You should be able to find that in the plugins/serendipity_event_contactform/ directory, in a file called "lang_en.inc", since your site is in English. You might need to modify the UTF-8 version, in its UTF-8/ subdirectory.
