The number of comments is returned by querying the database; so there must be 38 comments in the database whose status is "approved!
Usually also blogcounters and spiders count as visitors, so that number does seem not so far off...?
What does your webalyzer or awstats or similar logfile analyzers say?

Do you have phpMyAdmin? If yes, can you browser your serendipity_comments table? Maybe you changed the comment-options to only view moderated comments or sth like that, which is why the comments are hidden?

not this one, but I made a new entry the last day on blog.defo.info and I am not sure, if the displayed "klicks" are right with over 200 in only a few hours.
Could you execute the SQL of the statistics plugin manually?
