is it possible to mimic moveable type?

Post by trishna »

just had a quick question...

i am thinking about starting a gossip blog sorta like perezhiltons
but he & all the other gossip bloggers pay for "moveabletype"..

i don't trust moveabletype cuz they charge for a version
& then change their mind on the next version alot...

like the one now is free but the next one who knows what they will do...

is there a way to make s9y look similar to his sites?

i don't want to post a link to his site cuz of etiquette but you can
google his name...

thanks to all in advance for your help.

also, honestly not trying to bash moveabletype either....
just want an open-source equivalent

The short answer is 'yes'. Having looked at perezhiltons site the design is quite straightforward - but why not have your own style instead of copying another?

That would be a very easy design to emulate. There is nothing in that design that Serendipity couldn't do. Apart from the stylesheet, you should only need to edit entries.tpl and comments.tpl to make those look the same, and to change the sidebar headers into graphics see this article

The filed under tags could be done by placing the freetag plugin under the entry title, and then style it so it includes the arrows.

i really like serendipity & appreciate all the hard work
you guys have put into it.

i will begin working on it

p.s.
maybe one day, 1 of you guyz could make a generic template
similar to his
this is just wishful thinking on my part because i know you all have
super busy lives.
just thought it would be no harm in the asking :D

thank you again & apologies for subconsciously begging

Hi Trishna!

You should have a look at our other templates (spartacus.s9y.org)! 99% of them are better than the perez-site, which actually does not look good at all. ;-)

Have fun and best regards,

Trishna, welcome to Serendipity, please remember to add your site to the showcase forum when you're done so we can all see what you've come up with.

As for producing a template similar to the perezhilton site, I'm afraid I'm with Garvin on this one. There are some nice things in the perez design, but overall it looks incomplete. A better suggestion would be that you make a variant of your new template available for others to download, and many of us here would be delighted to help you with the coding if this is new to you.

no problemo :D

thanks for all your help 8)

i have a question.

i accidentally hit the restore database option within the backup plugin
& now i have like 4 entries of each plugin :?

i am deleting in them in phpmyadmin but is there anywhere else
it could have messed up when i did the restore on top of an active database?

thanks again :P

p.s.

also in the backup plugin, do i need to highlight each item before i choose backup?

Hi!

When you "restore" to a non-empty database, the plugin just inserts all values over the existing data. I think you should now also have all of your entries multiple times.

There's no easy way to fix that; you should maybe best re-install s9y, or empty all your serendipity DB tables and then re-import the backup [but make another backup before you do all of that]

Garvin
