is there any way to set serendipity to shoow only posts from one certain category on frontpage?

Yes, there is! You are looking for the "Start Page Category" plugin (or serendipity_event_startcat, depending on which name you are comfortable looking for).

It is an event plugin which you can download from Spatacus.
