Want to use my own header & footer

Hello forum

I intalled this blog for multiple users. Everything worked fine. But there is one problem. I want to put my own header at the top of the blog so that it will be mixed up with my other pages.

The Installation Docs available on www.s9y.org are only for experts. These are usefull for 90% general people like me. They should be more descriptive and helpful. These should guide the user step by step. I request the community to kindly rewrite the manual and copy of installation manual should be with the software itsel.

Now my problem:

I could not understand what to do. I simly put my header code in the top of index file. But the header does not appear. When I choose the command 'embed' in admin area..... The header now appears but all the other content becomes unformated, means the css style does not work.

Now I request the users and experts please HELP me.

In what file do you insert your code?

You have to take the index.tpl of the template you have choosen.

Yes !
I have inserted the header in index.tpl of the theme i selected.
The header is comming.
But the real problem is that the style and formating are gone.
I am in trouble please help.

Hm, a) which theme and b) can you post the first lines of your index.tpl?

You can fix the style problem by including

<link href="style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

in your header and copy the style.css from your template map to the serendipity map, or you can change the path to the location where the right style.css is located.

However, having this fixed. If you click comments my header and footer are gone! How to have the page open the comments in the same table with my own content wrapped around it?

Webber: The comment popup has its own template file: commentpopup.tpl - you need to insert your custom code there as you did with the index.tpl.

Hina: What's your URL? I guess you have enabled the "URL Rewriting" option in your serendipity configuration, but your server can't handle it...so you need to use "NONE" as "URL Rewriting"?

Hm, on a first view, I did not see any fault in your index.tpl.

Do you use 'embed' now or not?

Hi!

By looking at your URL, I can tell you two things:

1. Your URL Rewriting is disabled (as it shuld be)

2. You have enabled the "Embed" mode of serendipity. That is why no header and footer is displayed. Do not enable this, if you plan on editing your index.tp file. Embed mode is only meant for advanced PHP redirection of custom scripts.
