track exits still broken

That is funny: Just yet I fixed an issue with https and exit tracking (but you shouldn't be affected by that). And I'd suggest you to use the final 0.7 release version, I think only there the bug had been fixed.

Anyways, 0.8 comes with some more cool new features; but I don't suppose it will be out this year. But our current development snapshot is already quite 'tryable', I'm even running it on my live site

I downloaded the latest snapshot last night but had a problem with mysql permissions and haven't gotten it installed yet. I was going to install it seperately from my live install but should it be safe to upgrade my version of 7 with the latest snapshot?

Well, that's a tough question. I and at least some others were able to upgrade from .7 to .8 without problems - but the 0.8 version is still experimental. But if you like to testdrive new features, you'd be welcome!

Since installing Serendipity is not that hard, you maybe should go with a dummy installation first, and only if you are happy with it migrate your live site. 0.8 introduces quite a few changes to theming/templating, and depending on how many changes you made with your theme, you may need to re-edit your themes to get everything working again. It's not hard or much after all, but it would require a few adaptions if you want to take full advantage of the new system.

I did upgrade to 8 alpha 4 a few minutes ago and when I went to my index page after the files were all uploaded it was just updated it didn't ask me anything. The template was just changed and it was upgraded! I am using IE 6 and get a message that the page loaded but has errors. It seems fine I suppose but has an error starting in line 96 char 24 - invalid character up to line 5??. Anyone else seen this?

I hate to say it also but it still doesn't seem to track exits to the ones I asked you about earlier. ktbs.com and newsmax.com

It did on the fresh install I did of 8 alpha 3.

Just thought you might want to know how the upgrade went from version 7 beta 4 (I believe 20 October release) to 8 alpha 4.

I deleted the exit tracking plugins and reinstalled them and it now tracks the newsmax.com link but still not the ktbs.com link. What could be differrence between the links?

I haven't looked into the invalid character error yet. (not real sure what to look for really!) It doesn't seem to keep anything from working.

I take the ktbs.com exit remark back. I added a new entry with a link to that site and it work on the new entry. Forget all the exit tracking problems!

The invalid character can be found in your sentence:

The bogus character is the long dash - that one is not valid html. Replace it with a single "-" character and it should work fine

Hm, it seems that the IE complains because we use XHTML-style closing tags of the META-Tags in the header.

You may want to turn on "XHTML11 compliance" in the Serendipity configuration, and then it should work fine. Additionally I advise to install the 'Fix HTML Errors' event plugin, which fixes some problems with undefinied entities...then your page should even validate properly with the W3C validator

I turned on both and still get the error but if I refresh the page the error goes away.

Hm, did you install the "Fix XHTML errors" plugin? Because there are still some issues it should have fixed (don't know if it also applies to a sidebar nugget - but you'd neet to check [x] apply markup on the html nugget config for it to apply).

Look at the W3C page: http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1 ... .com/blog/ for the errors in detail...maybe you can put a hand on them, so that there shouldn't be an IE error anymore?!

Most of the errors found by the validation service were in an HTML nugget I had. I took it off and the last 6 were in the 'Categories' plug-in. I removed that plugin and was validated by W3C as being valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional. I hate to say that I still get the same error on my page.

The error found when the 'Categories' plugin is installed is the same piece of code 6 times. This line:

Hm, okay - the double plugin style was fixed in CVS a couple of days before, but that should really not be the reason for the error. If your page validates properly and IE still shows the error....well...I'm without clues then

I hate to keep bugging you about this but...

It still doesn't seem to be tracking exits from time to time and tonight all of my exit totals went back to what they were a along time ago or something. The top exit count for the top one was at 32 earlier today and not it's at 5. Some work and some do not again! Could there be something wrong on the server end to cause this?

The Top Exits are displayed per 2-weeks period (or one month...don't remember) and not the cumulative hits of all times. This is so to normalize the exits, since you usually want to see how many hits recent entries are receiving...
