Actually the podcast plugin can also deal with image files. The player integration though must be enhanced, as it currently only rewrites mp3 links.

You can find that in the plugin file at the "var $playerHTML" location. If you tell me a <object> tag that can be used for mpg/avi files, I can patch it into the plugin file easily.

What exactly do you mean with "this"? If you describe what you want in your serendipity blog, we can talk about it. :)

I am sorry. I thought that minus the ads, my question was/is self evident.

Anyway, following your direction, can we use serendipity to:

1. List Today's Featured Videos like YouTube
2. When you click on a particular link in a Featured Video, will it play the featured video like YouTube.

Yeah, you could do something like this, but it will need plugin development. You can upload your vodcasts via the simple media manager feature. Then create a plugin that reads the serendipity_images DB table to emit a list of recent vodcasts/videos. There you can also have pages that link to your vodcasts.

The other option is to create a "Vodcast" category where you simply post your vodcast HTML code, and then use the "showentries" plugin to show the postings in that category in your sidebar.

I am an idiot, so I am no help.

But... I'd put this on some "to do" list with the project. I believe this is the future. If we offered this, it would be a compelling competitive advantage.

I actually don't believe in video casting, but maybe someone else wants to offer easier integration.

But, Brian, the option with "Vodcast category" already is a possible way to go with. With some smarty templating you could also use the "Custom Entry Field" feature to enter the URL to a vodcast which you could then list in some "Latest vodcasts" template of the show_entries plugin. But that's still some Smarty templating to do ;)

With regard to believing in video...

http://home.businesswire.com/portal/sit ... ewsLang=en

Video iTunes Triggered Online Video Big Bang, says ABI Research
OYSTER BAY, N.Y,--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 23, 2006--The momentum Apple created when it announced last year that it would sell videos online through iTunes continues into 2006. While the push to online video had started well before the launch of the video iPod (demonstrated by skyrocketing advertising rates for broadband video impressions throughout 2005, and the launches of various online channels by large content companies) the online video "big bang" started with Apple's announcement and continued through the Consumer Electronics Show.

Yes, but I do not believe in video broadcasting for the usual blogger. I would never want to record videos for my blog and know a hundred persons who'd also not like to share their face and brabble into a microphone.

I think it's the same reasons, why video telephones have failed to hit (at least in europe) for a decade. Plus, it's not so easy to broadcast a video, because video editing is hard and you need the technical equipment.

Text blogging rules, plus it's asynchronous. :-)

Garvin:

If we were an investment firm, I'd hedge that bet. :)

I think what is emerging is a amalgem of both. I think Serendipity (with a little modification) is particular suited as a solution.

Furthermore, there is at least a "perceived" demand for video (see above). In marketing terms, it's sexy. If you were "customer" choosing a blogging tool, this could be a point of differentiation.

Just a thought.

Yes, I do think s9y is suitable for the job, even without any plugins.

So instead of telling "hey, s9y supports videocasting" I'd rather say "hey, s9y supports everythingcasting, just get involved in our templating and you'll see what wonderful things you can achieve".

I do know that some things might be just "cooler" as a plugin, but then I'm sadly not available for that task (for free), because of my personal desinterest of videocasting. :-)

I hope I don't sound to snobbish, but all I try to do is that I see your point and it's not hard to achieve, but I can't do it. :-)

With the best regards,
Garvin

Hmmm, hmm-hmm...

I think we could get clever with this. It sounds like we just want to duplicate the QuickBlog functionality with a video-compatible template, and maybe add a sidebar plugin for 'recent' or 'popular' or whatever (someone would have to define that).

I'd write it to add a link to "Add Entries", something like "Add Video Entry", which would then take us to the media manager screen. There, we would add a file, a title, and a description, which would be processed with a custom template and added to a "Video Blog" category.

How close is that to the desired functionality?
