I'm kinda clueless on where to begin or even how to unpack tar files... I've read somewhere with you need a telnet software to input commands on the unix server to unpack the file? Anyone have time to give me a simple tutorial and what software I would need.

You can unpack the files on your local machine and then just upload all the files via a FTP client to your server.
