Installation help for a complete and total beginner please?

Post by clcrm96 »

Not sure I'm posting this right so PLEASE bear with me! I was using Serendipity because it came already with my previous host. And I loved it. But I just switched hosts and would like to use it again. I downloaded everything and then uploaded it to me new server. When I type in the URL
http://www.latoniasdream.com/serendipit ... .index.php (I know, long name)
, i get this error:

Warning: main(s9y/index.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/latonias/public_html/serendipity/deployment/index.php on line 6

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required 's9y/index.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/latonias/public_html/serendipity/deployment/index.php on line 6

I have the permissions set correctly...I think. Aren't I supposed to get a welcome page or install page or something? Please help, I have NO CLUE what I am doing! (can't ya tell?)!
Thank you and God Bless,
Ya'll are awesome,
Crystal (clcrm96)

You should not call files from the "deployment" folder! This one is only used for Serendipity Shared Installations (see technical docs on www.s9y.org).

Access it with "index.php" only...are you sure you copied all files properly?! It seems the URL http://www.latoniasdream.com/serendipity/index.php doesn't exist. But it should. :-)

Garvin

I am pretty sure I copied it correctly. Maybe I did it wrong but I am using FileZilla and I just uploaded the serendipity folder to the public_html folder. Is this wrong? I really do appreciate your help and I know you are busy. I am just feeling super stupid today. Which I am but even worse today LOL! Thank you!

No problem. Just make sure that all the files are properly uploaded and you have a "index.php" in the serendipity main directory.

Disregard the "deployment" directory completely, it is irrelevant for you. :-)

Garvin

Ok, I downloaded serendipity directly from s9y.org and then uploaded it and didn't change anything but the only things in the main serendipity folder are the deployment folder and plugin folder.!!! What else should be in there? There are other things in those folders of course but that's it in the main.

It seems you didn't extract the folders correctly then!

There are several files missing, if deployment and plugins are your only folders. This is the file structure how it should look like:

Please use a tool like 7-Zip to unpack the serendipity-0.9.1.tar.gz file!

Oh I think I had a corrupt download. I am using WinZip to unpack it. I went back and downloaded a different version just to be sure and it is all in there. Thank you so much for your help! It is greatly appreciated!
I will leave you alone now beacuse I am off to upload and see if it works! WOOHOO!

Garvin,
I just wanted to thank you again for your help. I never would have realized I had a corrupt file because I didn't know what all was supposed to be in there and didn't know where to look. I got it up and running now and am happy!!!!
Thanks!

God Bless and Merry Christmas,
