Problems using Firefox @ Suse 10.0

Post by bbruecker »

After I installed Linux 10.0 I am very unhappy loading my admin interface with Firefox on this fresh new installation. The admin sites of my Serendipity 0.8.5 installation are so slow, time out errors appears very often or it takes serveral minutes to load the interface.
Some websites where slow, but after googeling I found one importing setting, network.dns.disable on true in Firefox, and all other websites than my admininterface for serendipity worked fine. Konqueror is fine too, and is also loading sites of my admininterface quick, but it can't load the Wysiwyg editor.
I've got no problems on the same computer with the same network using Firefox on Windows XP. I was testing for hours other, large and difficult websites – they are as fast as browsing with XP.
Why do I ask at this question at the serendipity forum? My serendipity is the only website that causes this trouble (and I hope this is also a place to meet Linux experts).
There must be a special effect with the admininterface of my website (s9y.benjaminbruecker.de) and network settings of Firefox browser on linux.
I hope somebody here has suggestions. Thank you!

Check your serendpity configuration what URL you use to access the admin interface and see that it matches the setting of your baseURL. If not set to the same HTTP address, this can be responsible for your timeout problems.

An example: If you use http://www.myblog.de/admin to access your admin panel, but your baseURL is set to http://192.168.0.1/admin this would be a wrong setting.

Sadly I don't use neither linux nor suse, so I don't know further about any issues. However if all is well on a different OS, the problem is unlikely to be a s9y problem but more a browser/OS-config thing. Did you try another browser on your linux system, like konqueror?

Hi Garvin,

the url to the blog is: http://s9y.benjaminbruecker.de/ and I the link to the admin interface is http://s9y.benjaminbruecker.de/admin -- that looks all right for me.

I was testing out other serendipity blogs, and I found the same problem with the site of http://blog.koehntopp.de. Maybe Firefox on Suse has problem, if the blog uses a subdomain and not a path on the server.

Other websites are fast. Konqueror is much faster, if I use DNS-Server directly on my suse computer. But Konqueror is not able to load the Wysiwyg editor (and maybe that’s not the only problem).

I'm sure Suse causes the problem because my website is fine to browse with any XP computer, but isn’t Suse very popular? I’ll call them.

Benjamin

Hm, this sounds like a firefox issue then to me, coupled with maybe a glitch on Suse. I don't know much about that, but maybe their support can help you?!

Best regards,
Garvin

Hi,

I forgot one importent issue: The Firefox browser is displaying a 500 error. This is usually displayed if some files are not 755. But the 500 error appears somites and sometimes not. So i think, all necessary files are 755.

After disabeling IPV6 completly on my Suse system, and Konqueror is loading all linked pages from my blog well, the problem must be in Linux, because Firefox on konppix Linux is displaying the same 500 errors on my website as well.

Any ideas about 500 error and checking the communication between Firefox and the blog?

Can you post a URL that returns you a 500 error sporadecilly? This is a Server error, it cannot be caused by the visitor browser!

Hi Garvin,

You can try this: http://s9y.benjaminbruecker.de/serendipity_admin.php

Sometimes this page is loaded quickly (3 seconds), sometimes it takes 60 or more seconds – in most of the cases, and sometimes the 500 error occurs. After testing for about 40 times I can say the 500 error occurred 35 times after clicking the new entry (? I use the german version) link from the admin page. If seen the 500 error sometimes – but not very often – clicking through categories or after clicking entry complete reading. What I want to say is: it is not a 100 percent systematic error. And again: the error sometimes on blog.koehntopp.de clicking on categories and so on, but not very often.

It is strange. I hope you will find out something.

Hi!

Are you using a proxy or filter maybe? That might report 500 errors. Can you paste the exact 500 HTML page you receive? It might not even be from your webpage but from your localhost....

Hi Garvin,

I don't use a proxy server and proxy settings are disabled in Firefefox.

Here is the 500 page:

Code: Select all

<html><head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="de">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document"><title>Sehr geehrter Besucher</title></head>

<body>

<p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><img src="index.php_dateien/500.gif" alt="404 - Seite nicht gefunden" border="0" height="57" width="198"></font></p>
<p><font color="#b5d6b1" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">_________________________________________________________</font><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> <br>
  </font></p>
<table border="0" cellspacing="0" width="515">
  <tbody><tr>
    <td width="511">
      <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">Sehr geehrter Besucher,</font></p>
      <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">leider ist ein Problem
        aufgetreten. Die angeforderte Seite hat einen Script-Fehler verursacht.</font></p>
      <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">Haben Sie sich vielleicht
        vertippt oder eine alte URL aufgerufen? Wenn nicht, informieren Sie bitte
        den Webmaster dieser Homepage per Email. Um zu der vorherigen Seite zurck
        zu kehren, verwenden Sie bitte einfach die "Zurck" - Taste
        Ihres Browsers. </font></p>
      <p align="right">
    </p></td>
  </tr>
</tbody></table>
<p align="left"><font color="#b5d6b1" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">_________________________________________________________</font></p>

</body></html>
It is the standard error page from the webserver at domainfactory.

Hm, that's really funny. Maybe you can check the Apache Errorlogs / accesslogs and find what the error came from?

Hello,
It seems to be an special of firefox under linux. Mozilla and Opera are working fine. I tried this out with Knoppix and Ubuntu. I postet this effect at a firefox forum, but of course they are not interested in such strange effects of s9y.
I run s9y on a webhosting account so I don't have access to apache log file.
