Fresh shared install - customizing templates

Hi
I installed a shared version of serendipity in order to start a free blog hosting. However, me and my admin (we are not skilled programmers) are stucked in the template customization area.
I was wondering if some guys here can help us through this qucikly. I know it's related to smarty, but I had no time (yet) to take a closer look into it.
So, please, how is customization done? Where should we look, precisely?
