Upgrading through godaddy

Post by NMuse »

I don't know why, but my website's template started to look funny, even though I hadn't done anything to the settings. So, I changed the template in the hope that would help somehow, and now it looks even worse.
I have v 1.3.1- It says here http://www.s9y.org/37.html#A3 that it's just one click but godaddy isn't giving me an option to upgrade to the newest version. (just uninstall)
Any thoughts? Thanks

Not sure about the GoDaddy part of it. I seem to remember GoDaddy (preinstalled?) versions of s9y being modified to an extent that they don't resemble the standard s9y much. Don will probably know more about that.

Other than that, you should post a link to your blog so we can take a look at it.

We dont really know what kind of modifications are being made to your blog by godaddy...,

but (without warranty)

if you have ftp access to your domain and access to a managing database tool like phpmyadmin, I would simply follow this way:
  • 1. copy via ftp to your local computer the serendipity_config_local.inc.php file, the uploads folder with all its content and the template in /templates/***, if you have a modified one, which still has the name of a normally shipped template. If not, it will not get harmed by an upgrade.
  • 2. Open phpmyadmin, have all serendipity tables in the right window, find 'export' in the upper nav and proceed with saving the database backup.
  • 3. Download latest version of Serendipity - unzip it locally - and drop all files onto the old ones via ftp. Make sure serendipity_config_local.inc.php, .htaccess, and /uploads and additional /templates and /plugins are writable (chmod).
  • 4. Open your blog in your browser and follow the upgrade instructions, which should appear...
Then you will know if its possible. If not, inform your hoster to correct the issues fluently. Its your right to have a blog with the best release of serendipity you can get!

This procedure may solve your template issue. If not, and everything went through successfully, go into the template section, choose the bulletproof template, go to your blog and press F5 to truncate the cache, see if the new template is shown correctly and do the same procedure with your previous template.
Regards,
Ian

I don't remember godaddy doing anything unusual with serendipity... the one thing I seem to recall was no access to the database, but that could have changed.

I would try upgrading directly via Ian's suggestion if that is an option.

I remember various people reporting issues w/ installing s9y on GoDaddy or w/ pre-installed s9y on GoDaddy webspace (not sure which one), but that was a looong time ago. You could say rvsitebuilder is the new GoDaddy. But it may very well be it got better.

godaddy was NEVER as bad as RVSiteBuilder.... Bob Parsons, the CEO of godaddy, was using a heavily customized version of serendipity for quite some time for his blog... he still might be for all I know.
