Image upload quirk

Trying to help a friend set up a new serendipity site.... when uploading images, I simply get a blank white screen with the upload info:

      Adding image...
    * File bears.jpg successfully uploaded as /var/www/vhosts/site.com/uploads/image.jpg
    * Thumbnail created.
      Done.

The admin template is gone.... nothing but a white background and the text above... any ideas? s9y 1.5.5 & PHP 5.3.6.

Usually white page means some fatal error...
Try to read webservers error log files to find out why.
