A trackback is a type of comment. Is it pending and needs to be approved?
wow - now i got it working. not exactly as i wish it to work. but at least it does.
i did not allow "comments" for the articles. so that's why trackback did not work.

You can use the event plugin "Extended properties for entries" (I think it's bundled with s9y) to create non-public entries. You can also hide those entries from the frontpage and/or RSS feeds, and protect them with a password.
